Notey

Privacy Policy

Last updated 7 November 2026

The short version

  • Your recordings, transcripts and summaries are stored only on your device. We never receive them.
  • Transcription, summaries and noise reduction run on your device, not on a server.
  • There is no account. We don't collect your name, email, phone number, location or contacts.
  • There are no analytics, no ads and no third-party tracking in the app.
  • The app connects to the internet only to download its speech and summary models.

Who we are

This policy covers the Notey app for iPhone, iPad, Android and Mac (“Notey”, “the app”) and this website. “We” and “us” mean the developer of Notey. If you have a question about this policy, see Contact.

Data the app keeps on your device

To do its job, Notey creates and stores the following on your device, in storage that only the app can read:

DataWhat it's for
RecordingsAudio files copied from your recorder, or recorded with your device's microphone.
TranscriptsText made from your recordings by speech recognition on your device.
Titles and summariesMade from your transcripts by a language model on your device, or typed by you.
Recorder detailsYour recorder's name, serial number and pairing code, so the app can reconnect to it.
SettingsYour choices, such as theme, date format and playback options.
ModelsThe speech recognition and summary models, downloaded once.

None of this is sent to us or to anyone else. It leaves your device only if you share it yourself, or if your device's own backup includes it (see Sharing and backups).

What we collect

Nothing. Notey has no account system, no servers that receive your data, and no analytics, advertising, crash-reporting or tracking software built in. We don't sell, rent or trade personal information because we don't have any.

Apple and Google may give developers aggregated, anonymous statistics such as download counts, and crash reports if you have chosen to share them with developers in your device settings. Those are handled under Apple's and Google's own privacy policies.

If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write. We use it only to reply to you, and delete it when it's no longer needed.

Permissions

Notey asks for these permissions only when it first needs them. You can turn any of them off in your device's settings.

PermissionWhy
BluetoothTo find and connect to your recorder, list its recordings, download them and change its settings.
MicrophoneTo record with your device's own microphone. Used only while you are recording in the app.
Local network and Wi-FiTo join your recorder's own Wi-Fi hotspot for faster transfers. This is a direct link between your device and the recorder, not a connection to the internet.
Location (Android 11 and earlier only)Older versions of Android require location permission before an app can scan for Bluetooth devices. Notey does not read, use or store your location.
InternetTo download the speech and summary models. See below.

Internet connections

The app connects to the internet only to download its machine-learning models, the first time you turn on transcription and summaries. The models are fetched from public hosting services:

Like any website, these services receive standard technical information when a file is downloaded, such as your IP address and the time of the request. They handle it under their own privacy policies. No recordings, transcripts or other personal data are sent with these requests. Once the models are downloaded, the app works fully offline.

This website doesn't use cookies, analytics or third-party fonts or scripts. Our web host may keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses, for security and to keep the site running.

Sharing and backups

When you share a recording, the app hands it to your device's share sheet and you choose where it goes. From then on, it's handled by the app or service you picked, under its own terms.

Your device's own backup (such as iCloud Backup, Google backup or a computer backup) may include Notey's data, depending on your settings. Those backups are controlled by you and your backup provider, not by us.

Your recorder

Notey works with recorders made by another company. The app talks to your recorder directly over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and doesn't send anything about it to us or to the recorder's maker. If you also use the maker's own app or services, their privacy policy applies to those.

Keeping and deleting data

Your data stays on your device until you delete it. Deleting a recording moves it to Trash in the app, where you can restore it or delete it for good. Uninstalling Notey deletes everything it stored on your device. We can't recover deleted recordings, because we never had a copy.

Children

Notey isn't directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age where you live), and we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, laws such as the GDPR in the EU and UK, or the CCPA in California, give you rights to access, correct, delete or move your personal information, and to object to how it's used. Because your Notey data is stored only on your device, you can view, export and delete it at any time from within the app, and we hold no personal information about you to hand over. If you have a question or request, contact us and we'll help.

Security

Your data is protected by your device's own app sandboxing and storage encryption. Keeping your device locked with a passcode is the best way to keep your recordings private.

Changes to this policy

If we change how the app handles data, we'll update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect. If a change is significant, such as the app starting to send any data off your device, we'll also tell you in the app first.
